TANI

Initiated by Ariel Orah and Michele Lai from Soydivision Kollektiv

Tracing the historical, migratory pathways undertaken by plants that run parallel to that of humans, we propose an ode to ingredients, various substances to be found in most of our food cultures. We introduce a set of participatory - research workshops that explore the spectre of histories and imaginations that the ingredient plant, as one of desire, and of delight. These will be conducted in the vicinity of the neighbourhood.

Our workshops reflect the trajectory of the ingredient as an archive of relations between plant and human communities, but also articulations of the fantastical interactions between them.

Each TANI workshop invites neighbours: human and non-human collaborators in an exchange of stories, through communal specific ingredient (One ingredient at one time!) making and storytelling activities. The collective exchanges will see us learning, foraging and fermenting together, resulting in a collection of dishes and stories that reflect the diversity of our plant and human counterparts, within the vicinity itself.

Vol #02 picks up from our last workshop as we continue tracing by way of sonic and fermentation pathways, the origins of Arak made in pre-colonial Indonesia, to huangjiu traditions by the Chinese diaspora in Singapore and Indonesia. There will be samplings of sonic contours by @ravenative and glutinous rice wine from Vol #01 for all.

“KENTANGGUNG”

FOCUS INGREDIENT : POTATO

In the Bahasa language kentang means potatoes, while tanggung can define a plethora of words: to hold responsibility, to bear, to assure, to be half-hearted, to be awkward and to guarantee. Tracing the historical, migratory pathways undertaken by the spud, we propose an ode to the potato, this  participatory research workshop explores the spectre of histories and imaginations that the potato, as a seed of desire and delight contains.

In the first part of the workshop (“Planting”) we will gather to plant potatoes and reflect about the myths of potatoes, its stories, folklores and rhymes, as well as share anecdotes about the potato. In the second part (“Observing”) we will explore the potato from a microscopic point of view and also discuss toxicities and neutralising potatoes. And in the third part (“Showing”) the workshop invites the participants to enjoy a potato cooking session, which continues with a performance lecture and eating session later on.
